Vegemite for non Aussies

We're happy little Vegemites

As bright as bright can be.

We all enjoy our Vegemite

For breakfast, lunch, and tea.

Our mother says we're growing

stronger every single week.

Because we love our Vegemite.

We all adore our Vegemite.

It puts a rose in every cheek!

I know that the average non Australian opinion of vegemite is not very high, but I am here to change all that, especially Kirk's (this is for you boy, because he asked for it ; ). I think there are two main reasons for this: 1) because vegemite is made from Yeast extract, 2) When Australians make vegemite for American's they COVER the bread with vegemite, cause that's FUNNY!!! ( Haven't you ever heard of the "little aussie larakin" HA!)

So why eat this stuff? It tastes good, not like chocolate and there is no way that you would spoon it from the jar and secondly because it is good for you! It is high in Vit B, folate, and only 38 kj's per tsp, don't you know ;)

How to make Vegemite toast

1 jar of vegemite
butter
2 slices of bread ( I used Sourdough bread from Rise in Newtown
1 cup of tea

Put kettle on for tea, put toast in toaster. When toast is toasted, generously butter it up, then put alittle on your knife and carefully spread it on the bread. You don't want to put too much on, this is very important! When the tea is made, have the best breakfast, lunch or tea!

*Note* The better the bread and the butter the better the whole experience will be!

I have never tasted vegemite. Is it the same as Marmite?

Hi Boo
Marmite is vegetable extract and Vegemite is concentrated yeast extract. So it is much better!
(sorry sam, I don't like marmite)

Hey Clare, is this your poem or the company's? Too funny. I have to say, you make a good case for Vegemite, but I'm still not convinced. I'd try it, though, as long as you didn't cover my bread just because I'm a Yank, LOL!!

Hi Stef

It does look funny "googling" lol!

Hi Amy

I have always been intruged by Vegemite, but I haven't yet been brave enough to try it. Might just have too. I am sure I can find the stuff in NYC?!

Hi Wendy
I think with the large expat population there you should be able to find it

Hi Clare - Thanks so much, I love it! I guess I'm forced to actually try this stuff, now that you've backed me into a corner. Actually looks pretty good.

Hi Kirk
I would say you are very nicely cornered ;)

I hope you don't hate it! The vegemite keeps really well too.... I mean for years! you should see how big a jars you can buy of it! Some people even dissolve it in hot water... (marmite more though)!

See just alittle..... you will probably want abit more if you keep eating it... but at first have just a tiny bit. I think the only reason for fluffy white bread is for vegemite sandwhiches LOL!

the only reason I don't eat it all the time is because of it being a vehicle for butter ;)

Yep, I'm with you Kirk. It actually looks pretty good and heck, yeast makes the world go round! It's all over the place in the best of foods, ESPECIALLY bread. Clare my dear, I would eat nearly anything with sourdough. One of my favs is canned beef stew with toasted buttered sourdough.

Thanks for expounding on the difference between Vegemite & Marmite. I was under the impression that they were synonomous. How far apart are they in flavor? Both are rather easy to come by in pretty much any "LaDeDa" store! I'm still kicking myself for failing utterly to have a grand tasting while Kirk was here. I had said I would but when it came down to time, it flitted from my empty brain like a drunken butterfly!

Hi jo LOL
hmmm I think they are close but I think they taste heaps different, and I don't like marmite! crazy I know but I did try. There is also Promite... i like that even less though :P

mmmm sourdough ;) and I had i with unsalted cultured butter mmmmm butter lol

La de da store hehheh that is funny.... it is so commonplace here!

Vegemite is really quite good for you ... if you dont use too much butter and it is nice to have a savoury taste for a change....

You have to post your opinion up too!!!!

Clare,

Yeah my first taste of vegemite wasn't so good, but then the friend who made was seven and loaded both our breads. Both of us decided that it didn't taste good that way. I have had it a couple months later when it was thinly spread with butter and thick slice of homemade bread, and I enjoyed it. Hmmm maybe I will have to search ot out and see if I still have the same feelings towards it.

Hi Milly...
I don't like it thick either :P My Dad has it thickish with slices of cheese! But I think that is an experienced maneuvour motivate by the fact that butter makes him vomit!
I think it the best on toast so the butter melts... or you can mix the vegemite into some butter til it is the right taste a nice light to medium brown then spread that on some bread...... mmmmmm I am so having it for breakfast again tomorrow.....

hi clare - my hubby loves a spoonful of marmite in a cup of hot water, I do too once in awhile. Btw, what's Promite? sounds quite chemically toxic!

Promite is similar..... I don't like it though... it is quite sweet and hard to find.
Ahhh your hubby spent abit of time in england didn't he?

silly sausage - Clare's got it all arse backwards.
This is how it really goes:

Vegemite is a vegetable extract but Marmite is a yeast extract, a bi-product of the brewing industry, so Marmite is much, much better.

Hmm - which would you prefer - a spread made from brussel-sprouts and broccoli or a spread made from a nice, delicious pint of beer?

Marmite is shiny black and gloopy and sensuous, full of lovely the B12 vitamins essential for vegans.

Vegemite is hard and brown and looks like...

Sorry Clare - no apologies from me in the ***-ite wars

;)

hmmm... maybe I should try both? I've had my stomach stapeled so I have a problem getting enough B vitamin. I take it that is only in the Marmite though, according to B&P? By the by, Hate beer, love BSprouts... ::grin:: so don't bother that tact... Truth be told, I'm convinced they need to be tried!

Yea Clare, amazing isn't it? But then look at Tim Tam's... the only place I know to get them is a tiny little shop that is by the San Jose airport! You prolly have 'em coming out your ears! BUT! Do you have Oreos?

shhh - Jo - you are spoiling my beer joke. Nobody was meant to choose sprouts over beer.

I am not sure about the Oz stuff - but Marmite is very high in B12 which is why i ate a lot of it when I was a vegan. B12 is hard to get hold of through veggies when you are a vegan. It is an acquired taste. very salty. you can make it into a savoury hot drink as Clare suggested. I like that but could understand why millions wouldn't.No problme - all the more for me...

Hi Clare,
Hmmmm. If I ever get the courage to open the adorable jar of marmite I received in my Blogging By Mail package from British Sam (of Becks & Posh), maybe after that I will be ready to move on to vegemite. Am not holding my breath, though. Would much prefer chocolate over either! : )
P.S. Great post! It does make me want some good toast--but with butter and jam! : )

Hi Sam (Sorry love & Hate marmite)
Actually I just found out that they are BOTH yeast extract!(with a little vegetable extract) and it is promite that is the vegetable extract.
The ingrediants are essentialy the same but in slightly different proportions which accounts for the taste difference.

BUT Vegemite has less calories and much less sugar and salt OH! with the similar amounts of vitamins some more some less than marmite.

Hi Jo
Yep you should try both! I would prefer that you eat one than none ;) and yes we do have oreos!!

Hi FG
Remember LESS IS MORE!!!!
MMMM chocolate, but it is noce to have something savoury on toast!

Hi Joe
Not a problem, now you will be well versed when it comes up in trivia ;)

Hi little Kernal
I think vegemite is pretty good too.

Hi J
oooh I agree.... mmmmm do you ever have that with a soft boiled egg?

I've GOT to try this stuff! How about a little bit of jam as well? Or would that be contrary to the flavour?

CLARE,

toy soldier = bread cut into strips with butter ?

I love toasted bread with butter and sopping it up with a soft boiled egg. It is even better with thin spread of strawberry jam. *sigh* *rolls eyes sky ward*

Hi Milly
yep thats a toast solider! mmmmm, but toasted not plain.
not bad huh? Have you tried the vegemite yet? *grin*

Hi Clare,

I haven't tried either and don't think I will be soon either. Maybe I need to be convinced...

Hi Reid
Maybe you just need to wait for Kirk's taste test *grin*

Posted by clare eats

Oh for heaven's sake Reid! You eat raw fish! Kirk slurps squid intestines! Try this stuff! The only thing holding me back is getting to the store where it's sold. Mills, lets go for it tomorrow. I was hoping to talk you into doing a Milpitas banh mi adventure anyway...

Perfect eggs with perfect bread are defined in my book as slowly fried eggs in olive oil, sprinkle of salt on the yolks and the oil splashed on top. The bread can be either toasted Columbo sourdough slice or a particular type of bread roll available only in Spain that I don't know the name of...=o(

That is a pretty good argument Reid what do you think? I think that you like salty stuff... so you probably would like it....

Those eggs sound really good!

i've tasted both vegemite and marmite, i find vegemite slightly on the saltier side. anyway, you shld try toasting pearl barley type of bread, then slatter on thick peanut butter on one side and vegemite on another. super yummy!!

Oh now that's interesting Babe. But tell me, why on opposing sides of the bread?

If you like salt with your salt, you'll LOVE vegemite. Ahh, food of the gods. I can eat straight from the jar, but I've been raised on the stuff. My Yank hubby like just a l-i-t-t-l-e!

I also love a teaspoon of it in my mashed potatoes.

YUM!
