Utensibility

It is here! Utensiblity WeekThe gorgeous Sam from Becks n Posh has decided that the collective food bloggers could come up with a really important resouce, the best the Utensibility Utensil list. I think that this is really important, there is nothing worse than spending your hard earned dosh on a useless utensil. There are lots of great utensils out there, many of you probably don't realise this but my naughty but very cute kitty Kiri inspired this blog by breaking my beautiful le creuset griddle pan. Which I have still not been able to afford to replace, anyone feeling really generous? I thought not *sigh*

My 2 most useful utensils are my Le creuset 24 cm Oven and my Furi East West Knife. I dont think I could live without either of them. But probably if I had to choose only one it would be my Furi E/W knife as it is MUCH more portable (lol) and I use it EVERYTIME I cook. It is light but not too light, so sharp and thin so that I can make the finest dice. The only thing better would be the whole set!

Sam also asked us to think of a bargain basement item. What is the kitchen utensil that when it is good you hardly notice but when it sucks can be very painful and cost you heaps in preperation time? The good old Vegtable Peeler! I love my Y Vegtable Peeler which not only peels vegtables so easily, but also chocolate. It also lets me make nice carrot peelings for salads and sandwhichs. This is not quite the right one... but it is close, I think I only paid $3 for mine and I wouldnt swap it for the world.. maybe but only if I could buy another one too :)

I hope you find my Utensible Utensils useful. I cant wait to see the roundup at becksnposh.

Wow, Clare - Furi brand knives are gorgeous.
My sister moved to Melbourne from England two months back and she is in the process of setting up home. I think she is going to like the products from that Peter's site. I am going to email her the link. Thanks.

Hi Indira

Peters of Kensington ROCKS! If I was her I would get a cheap flight to sydney and go visit PoK in person....

I would love to have some more Furi knives cause I think they are gorgeous too.... and they chop dice and slice brilliantly too :)

Ooh, I love this layout, too, Clare! The purple is so pretty. Nice writeup, too. :)

Hi Clare
I never heard of a Furi knife before. It sure looks cute. I, too, have the same le cruest (in green), unfortunately it is still in my parents' attic on the other side of the world. My other Le Creuset (which is now discontinued and I think was called a 'marmite') did make it across the Atlantic in my luggage. The reason I love my oval 'marmite' even more than the 'Oven' is because the lid has a flat top and has no knob. It can be flipped over and used as a little roasting pan by itself. Marvellous - I don't know why Le Creuset don't seem to make them any more.

You will have to check for the roundup (end of next week?) because a couple of people have suggested what seems like might be the worlds' best ever vegetable peeler and it's only $5.95

thanks for taking part

Hi Sam... I love my oven... the marmite sounds brillant. The make one that is like a sacepand and frypan combo but it just isnt big enough, it would be good to have as well.

I think my Furi is super sexy :)

Hi Stef
Gee you have good taste ;)

I totally agree that vegetable peelers are indispensable in the kitchen. Altho' a paring knife could probably do the job just as well, but the rhythmic movement of the peeler as it slides across carrots, potatoes etc, is so therapeutic, don't u think?

Clare Eats said...

Hi Eatzycath...
they are very soothing. You are right though a good paring knife and good technique is just as good. although you cant make as finer slices of carrots with a paring knife, I think you would need a mandoline.

Hi Clare,
Great post. I, too, can't wait to read the Utensibility roundup on Becks & Posh. I'd planned to join in but. . .

Oh, I lust after anything Le Creuset. And those colors!

And what would we do without our precious peelers? I have bought several over the years but only have one old ratty one that really works well and which I would never part with. Foolishly, I once brought it to a potluck party and left it there. I called my friend the next morning, frantic, and he rummaged around and finally found it. Then he said, "It's a good thing you called. I would have just thrown this out." Ack! I think I drove the 75 miles up there the next day to retrieve it!

I really love that little peeler, it is so sharp, so easy to use and only $3 *sigh*

very cool collection...re; l.c.griddle, i feel your pain. for lack of counterspace, i once stupidly left it on top of my dryer...turned on the machine, which rattles a lot, later in the day totally forgetting about the pan on top...came home to smithereens of what used to be my fave pan!
